Backup

For WordPress, back up two things: your site files and your database.

If you’re on cPanel hosting:

  1. In File Manager, download your WordPress files from the site directory.
  2. In phpMyAdmin, export the WordPress database.

To restore:

  1. Upload the files back to the site directory.
  2. Import the matching database in phpMyAdmin.
  3. Check that wp-config.php points to the restored database name, username, password, and host.

If this is on Managed Hosting for WordPress, the backup and restore options may be in the hosting dashboard instead.

Are you trying to do this on cPanel hosting or Managed Hosting for WordPress?

On Managed Hosting for WordPress, do it from the hosting dashboard:

  • Open Managed Hosting for WordPress
  • Select the site
  • Go to Backups or Backup/Restore
  • Create a backup, or pick an available restore point and start the restore

Before restoring, save any recent changes first, because a restore can roll the site back and overwrite newer files and database content.

Were you able to find the backup/restore area for your site?

For Managed Hosting for WordPress, export the database through phpMyAdmin:

  1. Open Managed Hosting for WordPress
  2. Select the site
  3. Open phpMyAdmin
  4. Select the WordPress database
  5. Choose Export
  6. Use Quick and SQL for a standard backup

If you see more than one database, make sure you pick the one tied to that WordPress site before exporting.

Were you able to get into phpMyAdmin for that site?

Use the site’s primary domain to identify it.

In Managed Hosting for WordPress, look at each site card and match:

  • the primary domain
  • the site nickname or label
  • the WordPress admin URL, if shown

Once you open the right site, confirm the connected domain on that site’s overview page before opening phpMyAdmin or any database tools.

Do you know the domain of the WordPress site you want to back up?

I can see one Managed Hosting for WordPress site with the blog title Primary Computer, but it’s currently attached to the temporary domain 1275702.us25.myftpupload.com, not primarycomputer.net.

So the right site to open is the one labeled Primary Computer. From there, open phpMyAdmin for that site and export the database.

Does that look like the WordPress site you want to back up?
